Barking up the right tree in Animal Care

This year, some of our students are studying the BTEC Animal Care Level 1 and 2 courses. This consists of five modules: four of them internally assessed and one through completing an external exam. Our students have just completed the external exam; we are so proud of them for the effort they put in to revision and their efforts on the day.

They have been visiting Nick’s Farm fortnightly for some hands-on experience with goats, rabbits, and chickens, which has been great fun! They learned about the animals, how to care for them and how to handle them.

This term, we are learning about Animal Welfare and the Laws surrounding this, the roles of animals in society, animal transportation and pet care.

During the summer term we will be learning about animal behaviour – both domestic and wild, and will be finding out how enrichment activities can help behaviour problems in animals.

We will be making visits to different establishments throughout the course for the students to see first-hand what working in the animal sector is like.

This is a great course for anyone who likes animals – I am enjoying it as much as the students!
